Roulette Bets

Roulette bets can be divided into two categories: inside bets and outside bets.

The inside bets are placed on the inner area of the roulette layout and the outside bets are placed in the boxes surrounding the numbers. Actually making roulette bets is as simple as placing your chips in the corresponding spot on the layout.

There are a ton of different bets you can make on the outcome of each spin of the wheel. Listed below are the different bets you can make, how to make them and the house advantage on each bet.

Inside Bets

Inside bets are called “inside” because they are placed by putting your chips somewhere in the middle of the roulette layout. This is opposed to outside bets, which are placed somewhere along the outer edge of the roulette layout. Inside bets are typically bets on specific numbers or groups of numbers with payouts that vary based on the likelihood of each bet winning.

Outside Bets

Outside bets are called “outside” because they are placed by putting your chips along the outer edge of the roulette layout. These bets tend to cover greater swaths of the roulette wheel. For example, a bet on red covers nearly half the slots on the wheel. Outside bets are easier to win than inside bets but the payouts aren’t as high.

Note on House Advantage

The house advantages listed here are assuming you are playing on a standard American roulette table. European roulette tables have one less “zero” spot and therefore have a lower house advantage. If you play at a European roulette table, the house advantage moves down to 2.7% for every bet. Any time you have the option to choose between American and European roulette, you should choose European roulette.
